What is SRT Subtitles?

SRT (SubRip Text) is a plain-text subtitle file format that stores timed text with sequence numbers, timestamps, and subtitle content for displaying text over video.

SRT is the most widely supported subtitle format across video platforms and editing software. Each subtitle entry in an SRT file contains a sequence number, start and end timestamps (HH:MM:SS,mmm format), and the text content. While SRT is universal and easy to edit, it has limitations: no styling information (font, color, position), no word-level timing (only phrase/sentence level), and no animation support. For social media video where animated captions are standard, SRT serves as a baseline transcript format that can be imported and then styled with platform-specific caption renderers.
