GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is an image format that supports short looping animations without audio, commonly used for memes, reactions, and social media previews.

GIFs use lossless compression for individual frames but are limited to 256 colors per frame, resulting in lower visual quality than video. Despite this, GIFs remain popular for their autoplay behavior on social platforms, messaging apps, and email clients where video may not auto-play. GIF file sizes are typically much larger than equivalent MP4 files because the format lacks modern video compression. For this reason, many platforms (Twitter, Telegram, Discord) convert uploaded GIFs to MP4 or WebM internally while displaying them as looping animations.
