What is Hook?

A hook is the opening 1-3 seconds of a short-form video, designed to immediately capture viewer attention and prevent scrolling past the content.

Hook Explained

The hook is the most critical element of short-form video performance. Platform algorithms measure early watch time and scroll-through rate to determine whether to distribute a video to more viewers. A video that loses most viewers in the first two seconds rarely recovers algorithmically, regardless of the quality of content that follows. Effective hooks typically use one of several techniques: posing an unexpected question, making a bold or counterintuitive statement, showing the end result first, creating visual intrigue, or opening with high-energy action. The hook must communicate the video's value proposition instantly without requiring prior context. In video production, the hook is often scripted and filmed or generated separately from the body content, then refined through A/B testing.
