What is Bitrate?

Bitrate is the amount of data used to represent each second of video, measured in kilobits per second (Kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). Higher bitrate generally produces better video quality at the cost of larger file size.

Bitrate Explained

Bitrate directly controls the trade-off between visual quality and file size. A 1080p H.264 video at 8 Mbps will be noticeably sharper than the same video at 2 Mbps, but the file will be four times larger. Each social media platform recommends specific bitrate ranges: YouTube recommends 8-12 Mbps for 1080p, TikTok recommends 4-6 Mbps, and Instagram Reels performs well at 3.5-5 Mbps. Exceeding a platform's target bitrate wastes upload bandwidth without quality improvement because platforms re-encode uploaded videos. Video bitrate can be constant (CBR) where every second uses the same data rate, or variable (VBR) where complex scenes use more data and simple scenes use less. VBR produces better quality-per-byte ratios and is the recommended mode for most export workflows.
